Cembrane Silicon Carbide (SiC) membrane modules offer an efficient, cost-effective solution to upgrading traditional sand filtration systems, resulting in higher output and better water quality.
SAND FILTER UPGRADE
Derived from sand, SiC has unique properties that allow it to act as a physical barrier for particles, microorganisms, bacteria, and even emerging contaminants such as PFAS and pesticides. This leads to using less coagulants, flocculants, and disinfectants, and significantly improves the filtered water quality.
A key benefit of SiC membrane modules is the ability to easily and quickly upgrade existing sand filter basins or settling tanks. The submersible aspect of SiC modules allows for easy installation by using existing basins, hence increasing capacity without needing extensive modifications and civil works.
SiC can even operate in gravity mode without the use of pumps to drive filtration. This result is a cost-effective and efficient upgrade that can substantially enhance capacity, efficiency, and water quality—all within the same footprint.

Key differences between Cembrane SiC membrane modules and traditional sand filtration
| PARAMETER | UNIT | CEMBRANE | GRAVITY SAND FILTER |
| Footprint | % | 30 | 100 |
| Influent TSS limit | mg/L | 10,000 | 20 |
| Bacteria removal | % | >99.99% | 20-90 |
| Turbidity | NTU | 0.02-0.1 | - |
| Coagulant | mg/L | 1-8 | 20-50 |
| Reject water | % | 0.5-5 | 5-30 |
Upsets in feed water quality is known to cause problems in filtrate capacity and water quality of a sand filter. However, because of the unique filtrate quality of SiCBLOX, the capacity will remain the same, as shown below from a surface water treatment site.
